What are Snoods used for?
A snood is a special headgear that covers the dog's ears and protects the long ear hairs from mechanical damage. It is like a cap that you will use more and more as your puppy grows to save grooming time. Long-haired dogs benefit from a snood for several reasons:
Protecting the ears from dirt and snags: Afghan Hounds have long, fine ear hair that is constantly growing and tends to tangle and collect dirt quickly. Snood helps to keep the ears clean by protecting them from dirt, hay, twigs, leaves, grass, snow and other contaminants.
Eating and drinking protection: Long ear hair can often get into food or water, resulting in a long and beautiful ear coat that your dog can just chew off and, with water, wash the floor :) The snood prevents the ears from getting dirty, falling into food or water, and also reduces the possibility of chewing the hair.
Preventing tangles: Everyday activities such as jogging and playing can easily cause tangles. The most prone areas to tangling are the ears. Therefore, even when wearing a snood, the ears should be brushed regularly. The snood helps to protect the ears from tangles.
In short, the snood helps you save time in daily grooming, but it should also be introduced to your puppy from an early age. The choice of snoods is really wide, ranging from thin summer snoods to waterproof and thicker winter snoods.
What are Legins used for?
Leggings, also known as socks, are another important element of fur protection. Leggings do not have a sole, so the leg is not stepped on and this does not cause discomfort to the dog. The Afghan Hounds have most of their fur on their long and beautiful legs and it is the legs that take a lot of combing time. To grow a beautiful, healthy and unbroken coat it needs to be protected. Here's how leggings work and what they protect against:
Dirt and grime: Leg hair can easily get matted when walking or jogging outside. Leggings help keep your dog's hair clean, so all you have to do when you get home is wipe or rinse his paws.
Tangles: Leg hair is particularly prone to tangles due to constant contact with the ground and plants. Leggings reduce the risk of tangles by protecting the hair from friction.
Protection against damage: Leg hair can be damaged by branches, bushes, dust, leaves, grass clippings and other natural elements. Leggings cover most of the leg fur to protect against mechanical damage.
Leggings can also be used not only in wet weather, but also at home. Usually cotton or other lightweight fabric. At home, leggings are mostly used during the dog's treat eating time, when you give a hard, long-chewed treat. This is very important if you go to dog shows. Eating the treat can get tangled in the dog's long fur. If you don't notice the dog can also chew the hair on its legs. It is recommended to put on a snood and leggings and let your dog enjoy the treats.
